Reasons Why Landlords Ban Candles in Rentals

While candles are great ways to keep a home smelling fresh, many property owners will not allow candles in their rental property. Candles can give off amazing aromas and be a great source of soothing light, but they can also be dangerous, especially if they are not handled with care.

Between 2014 and 2018, the National Fire Prevention Association recorded that various fire departments had to respond to an amazing 7,610 structures, whose fires were caused by the use of candles. It was reported by the same association that there was around $278 million in damages caused by candle fires, as well as 81 deaths and 677 injuries in the span of one year. It was also reported that there was an average of 21 fires per day that were a result of candle fires.

Another big problem with burning candles is that many people like to burn them while they are in their bedrooms, which can be very dangerous if they fall asleep with the candles still lit. Statistics show that 36% of these types of fires started in the bedroom, and 32% of these cases resulted in deaths.

These statistics might be enough to make you think twice about allowing the use of candles in your rental properties, but if you do decide to allow your tenants to use candles in your rental properties, here are a few rules and regulations to give to your tenants to ensure their and your property’s safety.

How to Use Candles Safely

  1. Never leave candles unattended: all candles should be put out before leaving the room, or at least, the house. Make sure the flame is completely extinguished before moving on.
  2. Make sure any flammable items are away from the candle. Clothing, drapes, and furniture should be at least 12 inches away from any lit candle.
  3. If there are children or pets around, place all candles out of their reach to avoid risking them getting knocked over.
  4. Avoid putting candles in places where there are drafts, as there is a chance that the wind could increase the risk of a fire starting.
  5. Ideally, only one candle should be lit at any given time. By doing this, you minimize the chance of forgetting about a candle that needs to be put out before leaving the rental.

Whatever you decide to do regarding candles in your rental property, work with your property management company to ensure that all your tenants know the rules.
